holding on
to the umbrella
for shelter from earth's filth
to the word
for escape from the world's voice

to gold
it never grows old
wealth at hand
never hard to hold
never hard to blind

holding on
to memories
those that bring joy
alongside those that hurt
yet we still hold on
to the truth

holding on
to all that matters
along with all that doesnt
making scrapbooks in our minds
trashing our bodies
bruising our spirits

why do we hold on?
to possibilities
hurt feelings
missed opportunities?
we hold on to our graves

positive or negative
never changes
